Apples and Apples

Applefest:10" x 10" Original Oil on Canvas: Available.

Funny, out of all the paintings I'm doing recently this one was the one I thought would be a breeze! HA. Not so. It was probably the most difficult.

Did you know a little over a hundred years ago there were 1100 varieties of apples in this country? I was shocked to learn that fact recently. There are appoximately 130 heritage apples left growing in the U.S. while just a handful (literally) are sold in our local groceries. What a shame and how did that happen?

I think this one maybe my absolute favourite, I could pick one of those apples up and take a delicious juicy bite! Your work is fabulous Mary.

Isn't it funny how sometimes the breezy ones turn out not to be breezy and the sometimes tricky ones turn out to be breezy!

I agree -- what a wonderful painting! I just signed up today for an apple CSA with a local orchard that grows heritage apples and pears, for delivery starting mid-August. I agree it's sad the slim variety that's easily available, and how tasteless so many of them are :(

Hi Mary, Thanks...I will add you to my blog roll as well. These apples are so beautiful, just good enough to eat, that is how real they look. Beautiful work. I know, it is funny isn't it...sometimes the things you think will be a snap, turn out to be so much more difficult and the ones you think will be so hard, you breeze through. I guess it is one of the mysteries of painting.
