Parakeets Oil Painting by Mary Hughes

6" x 12" Commission

Jeff Saturday, Lenny, Ethel and Daphne enjoying togetherness with the backdrop of a colorful sky in motion. They'll be going home to mommy real soon. I wanted to light them from behind without losing their distinctive color. The nice thing about painting is you can break the rules, which I'm sure I have.

Cockatiel Siblings Painting in Oil

8" x 8" Oil on Stretched Canvas:
"Show Me Yours, I'll Show You Mine": Purchase
(sides are painted for frameless display)

This Cockatiel pair (Poppy and Petunia) are actually brother and sister. The male is the one on the right. They share their days together playing, eating, squabbling every so often, preening each other and chatting. They are best buddies and show each other the sweetest affection. I love to paint their portraits in the different ways they interact.

Thank you for visiting!

Everyone Knows It's Windy

Windy Windy and Windy. Not your usual stuff either. Birds are having trouble hanging onto the feeder and the railings today. They are not deterred though and come back quickly to grab that lunch!

This 16" x 20" "Party Girl" painting is now available on Etsy.

SkyWatch Winter

In all honesty I didn't expect much from the winter skies in that it's grey so much of the time, so I'll take what I can get when I can get it!! After a heavy 10" snowfall we had this pretty blue sky day before yesterday and in the second photo (you can click on it and see it's larger version) you'll see Mourning Doves in the trees. They roost outside my office window in the winter and on the very coldest days I notice. Some days the tree is loaded with birds just puffed out trying to stay warm.

Be sure and check out the sky from the vantage point of others around the world by clicking on the emblem below! Happy SkyWatch Friday!!

Strength

SOLD

The subject of strength has been on my mind today. Our temperatures have been in the 20's many recent nights yet my Sweet Peas and Petunias are still going strong in pots. I see little birds and insects going about their business as tiny ice pellets and bits of snow drop down on their little heads. Nature teaches great lessons. For one we're all amazingly stronger than we might think.

Spinach Tree

Just completed: 6" x 12" oil on canvas. "Spinach Tree". Sold

Incredulous Budgies face the truth. Having been told spinach doesn't grow on trees, the evidence is overwhelmingly contradicted.

Hummingbird Close Up

We've had the fortunate experience of watching hummingbirds this summer from our dining room table. These tiny birds are amazing! I recently read a post from someone in Texas who went through hurricane Ike and reported that during 70 mph winds the hummingbirds were coming to the feeder and having their meal. They are tough little birds! They are also fun to watch.

Conure Painting

Blue Crowned Conure, "Fiona": Commission

One thing I love about painting birds and animals is that you can just feel their sweetness and personality while you study them.

Whatchadoin?

My husband Ron has been taking photos of the hummingbirds that come to the window feeder. I thought this one was pretty cute! Lots of them see us inside but unless we're moving around they stay and have their meal.

The Attack of The Wrens (or) Chipmunk Trauma

A beautiful summers day, a tiny Chipmunk minding his own business, five tiny Wrens sharing fallen seed. Sounds SO sweet doesn't it? Well not on this day. Not on this deck!!! These five tiny, sweet peaceful looking Wrens decide they didn't want to share any of the seed and created a half circle around the Chipmunk. (a wall was behind him) He was cornered. They then sprank into action and all jumped him at once. The cute little guy got away but left a shocked human behind. :)
The photo captured the moments right before the signal was given, and they all turned to face him. No kidding. It really happened!!

After The Rain

"After The Rain" Sold

This painting was inspired by a fallen nest I talked about earlier this month in a blog entitled "Week of Babies".
