Fledgling Bird Oil Painting

This little Robin fledgling is taking his first steps out of the nest. He was rescued after a storm that left him wet and on the ground with very few feathers. We found a nest, tied it to a tree and in a short time his mother began feeding him, visiting every 20 minutes or so. He lived the life of an independent youngster with support of his mother for almost a week. Rather than being pushed out of a nest it was his decision. On this particular day he stepped out of the nest, walked a few feet, took a look around, up, down, then turned and walked back to the nest and took a nap. He would brave the new world the next day. It was a unique experience and I wanted to capture it in a painting.

From my original oil painting. I was originally inspired to paint this stargazer lily after walking by it for several days. It was bent over and when I went to lift it up realized it had broken off but was in perfect condition. It had thrived disconnected from the rest of the plant and then for days longer in this glass of water. A bowl of green apples sits on the table behind the flower reflecting color onto the sunlit table.

Herons are interesting birds to watch. I like their slow long legged wade in shallow waters. One foot comes up and oh so slowly goes back down as they sneak up on their fish lunch. When they stand with their head close to their chest they look mysterious as if hunched over ready to hide their face behind their cloak (wing). In flight they are graceful and magnificent.

Male Cardinal Oil Painting

I have a special love for Cardinals as many in North America do. The North American Cardinal is a songbird and unique to a lot of the U.S., some parts of Canada and Mexico. It normally does not migrate in winter and stands out sharply against our snowy winters. The Cardinal is the state bird in North Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia.

While the bright red male is most popular I love the females too. They seem to have a graceful spirit. I've watched females wait their turn at the feeder while the male eat first. She is tender with her young. Males and females work together to build nests and raise the babies.

I've heard it said that pairs stay together for life, though I've also read that while pairs stay together through the winter 20% of them find new partners in spring.

As a child I had the pleasure of watching a family of Cardinals nesting in our climbing rose bush outside my bedroom window in Kansas.

Demittasse Cup Oil Original Painting

This painting is an overhead view of an antique demittasse cup and saucer. I liked the unusual shape of the pieces so I chose this set to go along with the light floral cutting. Demittasse is a French word for "half cup" and the cups are normally used for Turkish coffee or espresso.

They are also a collectable. The 2008 Guinness book of world records records the Ipswich city councel's Mayor has a collection of 1500 cups. Most who collect these have much smaller collections. I always enjoyed looking at my Grandmother's collection. So small and delicate and beautifully decorated.

I chose to name the painting "Tea and Blossoms" because it sounded better than demittasse and blossoms. You could drink a half cup of tea in a demittasse cup and no one would mind.

This painting is done on a 1/4" thick board with slots in the back ready to hang.

International Artist Day - Honoring Charles H. Sanderson

1925 – 1993

I first met Charles Sanderson my junior year of high school in Wichita Kansas. He was one of 3 art teachers at the school. My plan was to take classes from all of them and he was second on the list. As it turned out I didn’t take a class from teacher #3 but re-enrolled in Mr. Sanderson’s class my senior year for 2 hours a day. Mr. Sanderson was an artist first and I admired that. It didn’t take away from his teaching abilities or his dedication to his students. It enhanced the experience.

He worked in watercolor and acrylic, painting rural Kansas scenes, many incorporating geometric elements. He painted city scenes and abstracts too. Sanderson was very active in the arts community locally with shows nationally and internationally also.

Mr. Sanderson created from within, he didn’t just re-create what he saw. At the same time he was very observant. To this day I can’t drive down the highway without noticing the distant trees and how they look just like some of Mr. Sanderson’s paintings with the tops appearing cut evenly across.

His influence went far beyond technique. He talked to his class about art shows and the public's questions about the artists work. Descriptions of an artists life both good and challenging were often included in the hour and often with a dash of his humor. He told us not to paint or draw what we didn't know. If we didn't know the sea, don't paint the sea. Paint what you know.

Years after graduation I would run into him in a mall or at an art show and he would always want to know what I was doing artistically. When others were dismissing the idea of art as a serious endeavor, Mr. Sanderson approached his students with expectation and optimism.

In Charles Sandersons art class you learned the whole of what it is to live an artists life.

November 10 - December 17, 1999

In the middle of the Kansas Flint Hills, Charles H. Sanderson was born at Hamilton on March 6, 1925. He studied architecture at Kansas State University, transferring to Emporia State University where he earned a BA in art education. He completed his studies at Fort Hays State where he obtained his master of fine arts degree.

Choosing a career as an art instructor in the public schools, he taught at Altoona, Lyons (three years), EI Dorado (five years), and Wichita (twenty-six years). During these years he also taught classes for Butler County Community College, Kansas State University, Friends University, Wichita State University, Wichita Art Association and the Wichita Art Museum.

In the summer (spring and fall too) boats of all shapes and sizes bob on the bay waiting for their owners to come take them for a spin. A lane is left clear for a big cruise ship to pass through and dock to pick up people for an overnight trip along Maine's rocky coast.

In this painting you can see clouds gathering just over Islesboro in the distance, the many boats sitting in the bay and rocks peeking above the shallower waters in the foreground. Gulls perch on the rocks and swim in the waters.

For anyone who's been following the progress of this painting you might notice some changes. I wasn't happy with the shorline, trees and buildings so I decided to change it up. I've created a cloud filled sky. It's a hazy day with the sky and water seemlessly meeting. I like the openess of the background. It brings the focus where it needs to be, on the tug boats.

This print is from a painting is of a beautiful Red-lored Amazon also known as a Red-lored Parrot, Red Fronted Parrot and a Yellow Cheeked Parrot.

This species is native from Mexico to Ecuador, though it’s said it’s not seen on the Pacific side.

These beautiful birds are on the endangered species list. That is always a sad thing to hear about any creature. While it’s numbers are limited in the wild it’s a very popular companion bird in the United States.

It’s reported these beauties are affectionate, loyal and gentle companions. Some of these outgoing birds are good talkers too!

This particular painting is one of my favorites of the group of 12 I completed in the series. The colors are vivid and the depth and luster of the painting is rich.

I like to think when I start with an idea that it will look like I've imagined but somehow elements come into play that I hadn't planned. Starting with the idea to paint fruit on a white plate in the sun I hadn't thought of how much shadow there would be indoors, but I decided to go with it rather than create more lighting from the inside. It was fun to paint the reflections and shadows that didn't develop in my imagination. This is a mini series of 2. This would make a nice coupling.

The background is not black paint but a dark combination of reds, browns and blues to make up a rich reddish brown that at a distance looks black.

This tree provides shelter for Hummingbirds, Chickadees, Mourning Doves, Robins and probably a host of other birds and creatures I didn't manage to see. In every season birds fly in and out of it and in a snowstorm they take shelter here.

This particular day the sun came out after a day long snow storm. Heavy snow pulled at it's branches and surrounding trees and bushes cast long shadows.

I got the idea to paint this well before Thanksgiving. The title came to mind at the same time. I worked on and off on this painting for weeks and as it seemed I’d done all I could it also seemed incomplete and unfulfilled. It was just a roll on a plate. I then got the idea to add the knife thinking it was just for interest. The very evening I finished the painting I ran across an article explaining something about the line “Give us this day our daily bread” in the Lord’s Prayer. The article explained that bread in biblical times was made daily. Always fresh and eaten the same day. I remembered the story of the manna found on the ground each morning by Moses followers and how if they tried to keep some for the next day it would be spoiled. They always had what they needed “fresh” for each day.

In thinking about these ideas the painting took on more meaning for me. It represents the expectation of fresh supply each day. Fresh inspiration, ideas, and whatever is needed for each day. The knife now represents “and more”. The bread and some butter or honey. The basic needs fulfilled and more. A full expression of supply.

Very old trees line the path changing with the seasons and the light of day. On this day there was a fog creeping in. The leaves were just starting to change color in the tree tops. Over the hill toward the end of the path, a single bulb from a street light eerily glows through the mist.

International Artists Day

October 25th is International Artists Day (also Picasso's birthday) I'm joining other artists today to share appreciation of artists past and present. I'd like to focus on emotion in art. The emotion they felt in creating it and the emotion the art can generate in the observer. A famous example of emotion in art would be "The Scream".

The Scream is the creation of Norwegian artist Edward Munch. It is his most famous work and one of the most recognizable paintings in all art, painted in 1893. It has been widely interpreted as representing the universal anxiety of modern man. Is is described as being "painted with broad bands of garish color and highly simplified forms, and employing a high viewpoint, the agonized figure is reduced to a garbed skull in the throes of an emotional crisis. With this painting, Munch met his stated goal of “the study of the soul, that is to say the study of my own self”

Munch wrote of how the painting came to be:
I was walking down the road with two friends when the sun set; suddenly, the sky turned as red as blood. I stopped and leaned against the fence, feeling unspeakably tired. Tongues of fire and blood stretched over the bluish black fjord. My friends went on walking, while I lagged behind, shivering with fear. Then I heard the enormous, infinite scream of nature.
He later described the personal anguish behind the painting, “for several years I was almost mad…You know my picture, ‘’The Scream?’’ I was stretched to the limit—nature was screaming in my blood… After that I gave up hope ever of being able to love again. "

When a friend of mine recently asked me to paint a portrait of her screaming bird reminiscent of "The Scream" I had the chance to really study the painting and had some fun with it.

The style of art that evokes emotion for me as an observer would have to be realism. I recently viewed fellow artist Jeanne Illenye's painting titled "Overturned Apple Basket". I can honestly say I had a lump in my throat. Why would such a simple subject evoke such emotion in me? I can't say for sure, but I know such works of art have that effect on me time after time. I'm sure it's different for each individual. Youqing Wang and Jelaine Faunce are two other realistic painters whose works make my heart turn a flip. I admire so many artists working in different styles I couldn't list them all.

I've looked out on this scene often and the sky and water give me a new face each and every time I look. On this day dappled sunlight managed to reflect off the water that wasn't shadowed by the drifting clouds. The island is clearly outlined on this day. This is a soft painting. The canvas is stretched and I would recommend it be framed as there are staples on the sides of the canvas.

When I walked through the bakery department in our local grocery store one day this little tart called out to me, "Wouldn't you like to paint me?" and the answer was a definite "YES". Having previously lived in an area with a very modest grocery store something like this really stood out to me. It was so pretty. I was inspired and did my best to get it home unblemished.

I had the most fun painting the blueberries. The crust on the other hand fought me all the way.

I was so taken with the little tart I did two versions of it. This is the second version.

Trees on a Foggy Day Oil by Mary Hughes

To fog or not to fog that is the question. My original vision had this tree with the fog rolling in. This turned out to put the focus on fog rather than the tree and it got a thumbs down from my husband, so I reverted back to "the tree" and left some ground fog in the painting instead. What we see in nature doesn't always translate well into a painting, or at least one this size. Perhaps a larger painting with more trees that could take being a backdrop for fog, allowing others to be clear of it. I'll give that a try next time.

The painting is very soft.

This measures 8" x 8" x just under 1 1/2" thick. The edges are painted also.

Work in Progress Oils by Mary Hughes

Waiting isn't my particular specialty, yet it seems to be something I do a lot. So I try to make the best of things while I wait.... so this time around I'll paint my way through the waiting.

These like many things are unfinished/in progress. The first is a scene I see everyday. I fell for this tree right away and knew it had to be the center of a project. The finished painting will be in fog.

The next two are different perspectives on a tart I fell in love with at the grocery store (in progress).

The last painting, also unfinished is the wall and light outside my door. At night a lovely variety of moths congregate there. I'm especially taken with the white ones. The moths are not yet painted in so you don't need to strain looking for them. :)

I am enjoying taking advantage of what is around me and finding things worthy of a painting. There is a lot when we take the time to notice.

Another of the paintings I'm working on this summer is a group parakeet portait. The birds are blues and greens, so creating a natural background is a little tricky. I've opted to go with a sky in lavender, blue, grey and some yellow. It's full of movement and will for the most part be covered by the birds but I have hopes that it will make a nice backdrop.

The U.S. is rich in diversity and beauty. Happy 4th U.S.A.!!

Ring Billed Gulls Oil Paintings

I'm working out of a suitecase this summer. While this has it's challenges it also has it's rewards. While in Eastern Michigan for a few weeks I was missing the swans and my daily visits with the local birds at home, but soon enough I had bird visitors in the parking lot outside my motel room door. Ring Billed Gulls gathered every evening looking for food. I brought out a loaf of bread and had 30 - 40 instant friends. I took lots of photos and found they are very humorous and intesting to watch.

The little paintings above are just 1st roughed in layers of 4 of the gulls. I thought the way each would stand or walk was interesting and pretty cute, so I'm painting a little series. I'll update as the paintings progress.

The Daily Painters International Art Gallery blog is hosting monthly art challenges open to all artists. Each month a subject is selected and all who wish to join in put their talents and creativity to work to come up with unique ideas to post and share with the world.

When presented with these items to paint, a Volkswagen Beetle, a metal "love" sign and some building blocks it was time to stretch a bit from my usual fare. The love sign became a sort of love gas pump to this beat up "love bug". As I worked on it though it began feeling desolate. I painted it over an abandoned painting so my background of golds and browns was already in place. Sand and a dust storm became a natural backdrop. As I came to the last hours of work it came to me that this was different than my original view. It became a symbol of what so many of us have at one time or the other lived. Something that looked like love but was just a void in the end.

It's fun to challenge myself to see what ideas come forth. Won't you join us!

Dog Pet Portrait Tribute With Ashes

A few weeks ago I got an interesting commission order. A lady who had lost the family dog about a year ago was interested in commissioning a portrait for her husband for Christmas. The unusual part of all this was that she wanted to know if I could paint some of his ashes into the painting. This was unusual only to me as I'd never had that request before but I don't doubt it's been done by others many times. We talked about how his name and nick names could be incoporated into the portrait as well. Seeing that he played with tennis balls I thought the names on the balls would fit into the painting nicely. Klondike had unique black makings on his tongue too and we made sure that was part of the portrait. This tribute to this beautiful and much loved dog was a joy to paint.

These dogs are caught in the act of stealing a human moment. The dog in the middle is doing the "deer in the headlights" look while thinking he's hiding his Tootsie Pop. (Notice the bulge in his cheek?)

Boo Boo and Bat Girl Painting Missing

If you think you've seen these faces before on my blog and elsewhere you have. Back in February of this year their painting (below) was on it's way to Texas to hang in their home. The large painting mysteriously disappeared between Michigan and Texas and was looked into for 3 long months before given up as just permanently lost. To this date they have not been found. Odd how something so large can be overlooked or just misplaced. So now we have a new rendition of Boo Boo and Bat Girl. It's on it's way via another carrier.

Scream Rocky Style

My friend Mary (not talking in 3rd person here, it's another Mary) is an avid bird lover and rescuer. She and her husband have taken in many birds and work with bird rescue organizations. Her husband has been known to go rescue baby ducks from a city sewer. They deeply care for birds and go to great lengths to help them when they can. I so very much admire them for their diligence and love.

When Mary came to me with this idea for her husband I was excited. Their parrot Rocky had been on a screaming tangent for some time and she thought this would be a fun painting to have. I just completed it and it's in the drying stages. It will be on it's way to their home very soon. I'm so happy she chose me to carry out her creative idea. It was a very enjoyable painting to do.

Weeds Oil on Canvas by Mary Hughes

This spring was a cold continuation of our long cold winter. The planting season blurred a great deal and I just didn't plant a flower garden this year. So when a gigantic weed started it's takeover of the little garden spot in front of the porch I was temped as I was every year to bend over and pull it out of the soft sandy ground. It would have been so easy. But several times a day I would go out walking my dog and pass the fast growing monstrosity and keep on walking. I wondered at myself. Was I really this lazy that I wouldn't just do as I had every other time? What was holding me back from plucking it out of the ground and tossing it aside? It grew past my waist and I just didn't care. Yes neighborhood I have a huge ugly weed growing in my garden and I "Mary Hughes" am doing NOTHING about it.

Then one day I noticed buds. They didn't look terribly promising but they caught my curiosity and that would give me another excuse to not pluck the giant green monster. By now you've guessed. Huge beautiful yellow flowers opened up and fill the giant plant. I water it now, cut it's blooms, bring them inside, smile whenever I pass it's abundant beauty. My dog now waters it daily. We all do our part.

What is a weed exactly? A plant we don't want, or have low expectations of. One dictionary definition: "Generally, a weed is a plant in an undesired place."

I hope this weed comes back every year!

Just finished the two lizard paintings. While focusing on them I've at the same time been watching and feeding a swan family. I'll be posting photos and the story on my Michigan blog. I've decided to try and keep this blog all about art, so I've added two blogs to my list. One is on living in Michigan and the other one is written by my dog when I'm not looking. He's a real chatty Cathy.

I'm working on a new still life on an artists' board. I'm liking the process so far. They say the colors are brighter on a panel and it is nice and smooth. Hope to have it finished very soon.

Brownie Cheesecake!! For Real This Time!!

I applaud all the artists out there that can paint desserts and not eat them. I'm not one of them. I'm not proud of that fact nor am I apologetic. At this point in my life I ask "what am I waiting for?" The hope that cream cheese in heaven won't be fattening? Please!!

So I went double good. Brownie Cheesecake. Yeppers!! Brownie crust that fills in almost halfway into the middle then a nice cheesecake filling. Added chocolate swirled on top. All that's missing is .... there is nothing missing.

It was tasty.

I immortalized it on it's Blue Willow plate. A blue milk glass with the plate as reflection fills out the corner.

The ugly stage

I'm working on a lizard project for a nice friend of mine. The lizards are rather shy and interestingly so is the painting. What I mean by that is I'm having a small challenge getting the painting to reveal itself to me. They are sitting in their ugly stage at the moment drying and giving me some time to think about the next move. They look a bit like hand puppets at the moment. Though it might not look like it, I do have a direction.

I find some comfort I guess in a first layer, or second layer that isn't so refined. It's what I call the ugly stage. I lay down the deepest or near deepest color I think is underneath all the highlighted detail, be it feathers or fur, or scales. Sometimes it takes 4- 5 sessions before I get to the top layer of highlights and dazzle. Sometimes it takes just a few. When I get to the last passes it's surpising how quickly it all comes together. I think it's because painting the ugly layer gives me a sort of confidence. It's all up from there? I can't quite explain it but I find comfort in picking up a dry "ugly layer" and building beauty on top.

Dogs and Newborns

Spring has had such a difficult time getting a toe hold here that to realize summer is just weeks away is almost a shock, but our 80 something day today helped bring that idea home!

I've had the pleasure over the past few weeks and months to paint some sweet puppy faces. These are a couple of them.

While out on a stroll around the grounds this evening with my own puppy I spied a Mourning Dove high in our pine tree deep in the shadows. I thought she might have a nest there so I went to get my camera thinking she'd be there when I got back. Her sillouette was so beautiful with the sun slanting behind her. When I returned she had taken off but I found this little egg shell low in the branches and decided it would make an interesing photo.

As I walked along peering into other dense fir trees I spotted a robin sitting with her back to me low in a dense evergreen. She spotted me at the same time and flew off leaving a babe behind. So I took a photo with a zoom and quickly left so mom would return fast. This baby doesn't have much to keep him warm just yet.

As I came up on my front porch, mommy was in a tree nearby letting it be known she was not a happy camper. So I took a photo of her too peering behind the lilacs. I went inside and things got quiet right away and all is well. Last winter I found many abandoned nests in these dense bushes I'd not noticed in the summer. So many little eyes peering out at us as we go out into the yard.

Keeping Secrets

I'd LOVE to be able to unveil all the work I've been doing but they're all Birthday presents for customers! So, I shall wait.

I've been watching many of the birds that have come back to our area to play and start families. We've had an Oriole come to the hummingbird feeder at the window on a regular basis. He seems confused as to how to get into it and tries to sip from the tiny flower shaped feeder. I think he actually gets some. He's magnificent to see close up at our window, and I hope to get a feeder for him soon, so he'll be taken care of at our house.

We've also had several families of Geese. It's interesting to watch how the babies relate to each other and their parents. On one occasion all the little ones swam to the shore and hopped out of the water. They were not being chased or influenced by the parents seemingly. They parents were just sitting in the water, but they must have given them direction somehow. The little ones mimic the parents too by bathing when the parents bath. They're so cute splashing around in the water. As the little ones all decided to head back into the water one shy guy seemed to be having trouble deciding to get back in. He stood on the shore, dipping his head in to take a drink but held his position as his brothers and sisters started to swim off. They hadn't gotten two feet away when they all turned around and swam back to him, facing him in a half circle. They seemed to be encouraging him to come along and finally he did. How did they relate that message? Body language? Or do geese and goslings have a language of goose voice?

Chasing Chickens

I'll admit it right off the bat, I'm weird! When I see turkeys, chickens, baby geese, or a fox cross the road I become giddy and must take pictures!! All those wonderful creatures crossed my path the past few days and I found them fascinating! Not to mention all the horses, Shetland ponies and newborn cows. The countryside is teeming with beautiful wildlife right now.

These missies were crossing the road yesterday in front of us. Why did the chicken cross the road? They don't tell.

Our first newborn geese of the season on the lake. Six tiny ones bobbing in the very rocky waves today. The wind was fierce but mom and dad had them swimming and watched over them very carefully.

My husband and I were working in our garage today and a bluebird flew in, said hello and flew back out, then we were joined by a hummingbird. It's Disneyland in Michigan this week!

Everyone Knows It's Windy

Windy Windy and Windy. Not your usual stuff either. Birds are having trouble hanging onto the feeder and the railings today. They are not deterred though and come back quickly to grab that lunch!

Bluebird Swooping Day

Yes, it's Bluebird Swooping Day here in Michigan. Well at least over my house it is. For the past 4-5 hours dozens and dozens of bluebirds have been buzzing my house. We've been watching from inside for quite awhile and can see them from all windows flying around, up, down... I went outdoors and they buzzed me too, close enough for me to see their bright blue backs and red breasts. They have no fear and seem to be having a good time. Other birds have been caught up in the flight just to get to our feeder. I haven't been able to find any information online as to why this behavior, but it's a very interesting and fun experience to see them.

My neighbor has been feeding bluebirds for years so I would have expected them to be buzzing her house. It's several lots over.

As I write this these pretty happy birds are flittering by my window. Heavy rain is on the radar getting ready to move in, so this multiple hour show will be coming to an end soon. Maybe they're the bluebirds of happiness buzzing me.

Party Girl

Every so often I get the urge to do something a little whimsicle and it would seem this was one of those times. It was a lot of fun to paint. The most difficult and time consuming part of this painting would be the bubbles.

I have not yet decided in what venue to offer it and since it's still freshly painted and about a week from drying I have a little time to think about it.

Mothers at Easter

This is what Easter looked like at my parents home. My mother wasn't the type to go too crazy at holidays but she really liked Easter and made it special. This photo is her kitchen table on the day before Easter. (Sat.) many years ago. For me it highlights everything about that holiday with her. The preparation!

Her traditions always included ham, a lemon pie, Easter candy and lots and lots of colored hard boiled eggs. If you don't have stained fingers at the Easter table you messed up somewhere!

Easter as an egg and candy holiday was never my favorite until maybe today. This year we're having our first ever Easter holiday with my husband's youngest son, who is about to turn 14. He doesn't like ham or eggs either for that matter, but my maternal instincts have kicked in just having him around for this holiday.

I won't be dressing him up for church in a little Easter outfit like I did with my daughter, shown here at three years of age (being a really good sport in her white tights and sky blue Easter dress. The bonnet was left inside. Yes I made her wear a bonnet!) She turned out quite lovely, normal and a good mommy creating her own Easter tradition with her little ones.

I have hope that even though our visitor won't be enjoying his mothers traditions this year, he'll feel special and someday remember with fondness the offerings from my kitchen this Easter.
